What are signs of abuse against elders?

On Behalf of | Feb 8, 2020 | Firm News |

California residents entrust assisted living facilities and nursing homes. They should have caring medical professionals on staff. Unfortunately, that is not always the case. Elder abuse often happens in these systems. It is important that you recognize the signs.

Symptoms of elder abuse are difficult to detect at times. This is because the abuse is not always physical. Not only that, but sometimes the elder in question is not of sound mind. They have trouble expressing their distress. Because of that, these warning signs are easy to misinterpret. As their loved one, you should pay attention to:

  • Their behavior and behavioral tics
  • Their daily mood
  • If they are experiencing any unusual changes in emotion
  • How they interact with their surroundings and the staff

Often, the only sign of abuse is a drastic shift in how your loved one interacts with others. They may present themselves in different ways as well. For example, if your loved one is calm but shows signs of aggression without warning, something may be going on.

Of course, it is also important to pay attention to physical signs. Some changes are normal for elderly patients as they continue to age. But if you notice they are losing weight or developing sores or bruises, this could be a red flag. They may be victims of physical abuse.

Elder abuse is a harmful and tragic reality that many people in nursing homes face every day. If you wish to read more about the situation, consider visiting our linked web page. There, you will find more information about elder abuse including how to spot it and what to do about it.
