Common eye injuries after a traffic collision

On Behalf of | Feb 6, 2025 | Motor Vehicle Accidents |

Our vision is often something that we take for granted. Unfortunately, vision can be impacted after a car crash. The eyes are sensitive, and even slight damage can result in severe vision issues. Here are some of the more common eye injuries associated with road traffic collisions.

Eye injuries are usually the result of blunt trauma or debris like glass and metal particles. Some of the most common types of eye injuries include:

  • Corneal abrasions: These happen when the surface of the eye is scratched by debris and shattered glass.
  • Chemical burns: Airbags contain powerful chemicals. If these leak and go into the eye, it can cause severe damage.
  • Orbital fractures: The orbital bones are strong, but the impact of a crash can be enough to fracture them. Orbital fractures can put pressure on the nerves in the eye, resulting in reduced visibility.
  • Retinal detachment: This is a very serious injury where the retina separates from the back of the eye.

These injuries can vary in severity, but each requires urgent medical attention to reduce the risk of permanent damage.

Symptoms you can expect

While there are various types of eye injuries, some of the symptoms are common to some or all of them. Symptoms to look out for include:

  • Blurred vision
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Swelling around the eye
  • Blood in the eye
  • Feelings of irritation in the eye

These symptoms can often be treated easily, but they may indicate a more serious problem.

If you have been injured in a crash, personal injury compensation is possible. You must show that someone else was negligent and directly caused your injuries. Seeking legal guidance can help you to do this.
