When it comes to the most dangerous motorcycle accidents that happen on a regular basis, left-turn accidents are often near the top of the list. This does not refer to a scenario where a bike is turning left and crashes. Rather, it is a situation where another vehicle turns left in front of that bike.
It’s often impossible to avoid this accident. There’s nowhere to swerve since the oncoming traffic lanes are on the left. The rider’s only option may be to hit the brakes and see if they can slow down significantly before impact. So why do these dangerous crashes happen in the first place?
The driver doesn’t see the motorcycle
One of the most common things that drivers will say is that they did not see the motorcycle at all. They did not know that they were executing a dangerous or even illegal turn. They just thought they were making a safe left turn by themselves when they were suddenly struck by a motorcycle.
This could be because of the color of the motorcycle. If it’s a dark color bike on a dark highway at dusk, it’s going to blend in. It could also be due to other traffic on the road. If a motorcycle is hidden behind cars and trucks in a line, the driver may think they are turning through a gap in the line because they don’t see that it is occupied by a motorcycle.
Finally, some drivers don’t see the bike because of inattentional blindness. This is when a person’s brain tries to filter information to determine what is important, but it filters out unexpected details. Many people who don’t ride motorcycles rarely expect to see them, and the driver may simply not see what they aren’t looking for.
