6 tips for bicycle safety

On Behalf of | Jul 5, 2024 | Serious Injuries |

Riding a bicycle is a wonderful way to get around town and get some exercise at the same time. But because bicyclists don’t have the protection of a frame around them, they can suffer considerable injuries if they’re struck by a vehicle.

Motorists have a duty to watch for bicyclists while they’re on the roads. Bicyclists can also take steps to remain as safe as possible.

Wear a properly fitted helmet

Wearing a helmet is one of the best ways to protect the head in a bicycle crash. It should be fitted snugly and have never been in a crash before.

Use lights and reflectors

Bicycle lights are valuable during low light conditions and from dusk to dawn. They help motorists to see the driver. Reflectors on the bicycle and reflective clothing are also beneficial.

Obey traffic signals and signs

Adhering to traffic signals and signs helps prevent accidents and ensures that cyclists are predictable to other road users. Motorists should always give bicycles their due right of way.

Ride in designated bike lanes

Where available, bike lanes provide a safer space for cyclists and help separate them from vehicular traffic. San Diego has an extensive bike lane system to help keep cyclists safe.

Stay alert and avoid distractions

Bicyclists should always stay alert when they’re riding. This includes keeping an eye on the road and avoiding headphones so they can hear what’s going on around them. They should also avoid trying to use a cell phone.

Maintain a safe distance from parked cars

Riding too close to parked cars can lead to “dooring” accidents if a car door suddenly opens. Approaching parked cars carefully and maintaining a safe distance from them can help prevent these accidents.

Bicyclists who are struck by motorists may opt to pursue a compensation claim if the motorist in question and/or another party caused a cyclist’s injuries due to negligence. This effort can potentially help them to cover the expenses of the crash. California has time limits for these cases, so action must be taken swiftly to ensure that time doesn’t pass without getting a relevant case filed.
