4 reasons why driving in fall can be more dangerous

On Behalf of | Nov 8, 2021 | Serious Injuries |

Drivers in California face numerous hazards all year round. However, certain dangers are more pronounced depending on the season.

Fall presents a series of unique challenges to drivers. Recognizing some of the potential fall driving hazards could assist in preventing accidents. Outlined below are four reasons why driving in the fall can be more dangerous than during other times of the year.

Glaring sun

It would be understandable to think that the sun poses the biggest risk during the summertime. However, during fall, the sun sets closer to the horizon. As a result, sunlight may strike you directly in the eyes or reflect strongly from nearby buildings and windows. Exposure to sunlight can cause temporary blindness, which significantly increases the chance of an accident. Having your sunglasses at hand, as well as keeping your windshield clean, could offer some protection from the sun’s glare.

Wet surfaces

Deep puddles and surface water can pose a significant threat to the safety of drivers. However, so too can a lesser amount of water. California can often experience significantly dry periods throughout the summer, which could mean that dust and grime have built up on the surface. Once this dry dirt has been hit by rainfall, it can take on an oily texture, reducing traction on tires and leading to potential accidents.

Darker surroundings

When daylight wanes during the fall, road users are forced to operate more frequently in the dark. Darker conditions generally mean that vision is obstructed, and a change in perception makes hazards more difficult to anticipate. Headlights, high beams and fog lights can be used to counteract these conditions, but they must be used appropriately.

Adapting your driving style with the changing seasons could help ensure your safety. If you have been injured in an accident, it may benefit you to know your legal rights.
